Snow Blower-Owners Beware!

My poor dad....

Yesterday my dad had to make a trip the ER due to a snow blower accident.

I'm sure you're all cringing at the sound of that; you're picturing the spinning blades and the number of different ways in which contact with those could end you up in the ER. This is exactly what I was thinking when I heard the news from my little sister this morning.

Apparently he thought the blades were off and started clearing snow away from the machine when his finger made contact with the blades and snipped the tip right off. Feeling queezy yet? Okay, if that doesn't do it...

So my little sister (who has had her license for very long) rushed him to the ER all panicked because my dad was looking like he might faint at any moment. The doctors (including a hand surgeon) assessed the damage and found that the tip of his right hand, middle finger what sliced clean off from about the top knuckle up AND because my dad was wearing work gloves there were fibers embedded in the bone.

Unfortunately the tip of the finger was never recovered so they talked about a few options available. They could sew the finger, temporarily, to his belly where there would be plenty of blood supply and a better chance for the skin to grow back. They also talked about doing some skin grafts, but in the end they decided to somehow (and I'm a little foggy on the details right now) sew the skin together after clipping off the now-exposed bone with a pair of pliers. Hopefully the finger heals okay, otherwise they will have to amputate it.

He's in quite a bit of pain and trying to keep the pain killers pumping through him, but he is okay.

I don't think we realize how attached to our limbs we are (literally and psychologically) until we are in danger of loosing one.

Please pray for him.

I'm so thankful that he was NOT hurt worse.

Now, although we all know that we need to be careful when working with dangerous machinery (i.e. lawn mowers, snow blowers, saws, etc.) it's very easy to loose guard for a split second and end up with an injury.
If nothing else, this is a reminder to be careful out there!
